An Alien Place - by Carol Van Valkenburg

Book Review, © Copyright 2002, Jim Loy

This is the story of the Ft. Missoula, in Missoula, Montana, for a few years from 1941 to 1944. In 1941, about 1000 Italian sailors were interned there by the Immigration Service (Justice Department). Later that year, Japanese men residing in the USA (mostly farmers who had been living here for some time) were imprisoned at Ft. Missoula. Japanese citizens could not legally seek American citizenship at that time. Eventually, nearly 1000 Japanese were imprisoned there. These Japanese were imprisoned because of the fear of sabotage and because of nationwide racial hysteria. They were separated from their families for the duration of the war, and asked to prove that they were not sabateurs. Some of their sons were fighting for the USA in Europe. Eventually, they were sent to other prison camps, and Ft. Missoula was returned to the Army.
