Bobby Fischer Goes to War - by David Edmonds, and John Eidinow

Book Review, © Copyright 2004, Jim Loy

This is about the 1972 Fischer - Spassky chess match. If you followed it back then, this is what you already know and more. It is fascinating. In particular, it tells a lot about Spassky, and the Soviet side of the match. We see Fischer win the game of chicken, because he is willing to sacrifice the match and his career if his smallest demands are not met. We again live through the match, without seeing any chess moves. The book has only one diagram, and virtually no moves. This is a fascinating story for people who play no chess. The chess players will love it too, big time nostalgia. You might want to get out your chess set, and download the games from somewhere, and play through them while reading this fine book.
