Until Death Do Us Part - by Ingrid Betancourt

Book Review, © Copyright 2002, Jim Loy

This is a story about politics in Colombia; boring? Well, Ms. Betancourt is in vocal opposition to the drug lords who run the country, and she has been threatened with death. Her children live outside the country because of these death threats. Ernesto Samper, the former President of Colombia, sued Ms. Betancourt for libel, because of this book. In particular, Mr. Samper denied taking money from the drug cartel; he denied other improper conduct; and he denied any knowledge of the murders of witnesses against him. Politics Colombian style is more interesting than the politics committed in Washington. Ms. Betancourt is an amazing hero, who faces death every day.

News: On Feb. 23, 2002, Ingrid Betancourt, a candidate for President, and her running mate Clara Rojas, were kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, who wanted to trade them for prisoners held by the government. The government refused to make a deal. Apparently they are still being held.
