The Double Helix - by James D. Watson

Book Review, © Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

In 1962, Francis Crick and James Watson won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for discovering the structure of the DNA molecule. This classic book tells that story. There is some technical material here. But mostly, this is a nontechnical story of a race to be first to discover the structure. Their chief competition is Linus Pauling, "the best chemist in the world." They even withheld an important piece of information from Pauling, in hopes of beating him. And Watson frankly tells of his mistakes, and bad guesses. It is quite a story. You should read it.
