The Hot Zone - by Richard Preston

Book Review, © Copyright 1998, Jim Loy

The book begins by describing, in sometimes gruesome detail, outbreaks of Marburg (related to Ebola), and two strains of Ebola, viruses which seem capable of wiping out the human race. One of these viruses, Ebola Zaire, destroys human beings (90% of those who catch the disease) in a very quick and messy manner. Then Ebola breaks out near Washington D.C., wiping out monkeys that have been imported for laboratory experiments. And, after a massive effort to contain the virus, we find that . . . Read the book and find out.
