Isaac's Storm - by Erik Larson

Book Review, © Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

On September 8, 1900, Galveston, Texas was utterly destroyed by a hurricane. A tide 15 feet deep flooded the town; floating houses rammed other floating houses; bricks flew through the air like leaves; steel ships came to rest miles inland; and at least 6000 people died, maybe many more. Isaac Cline was the local weatherman. He had publicly repeated the conventional wisdom that no storm could ever endanger Galveston. And then the storm of a century arrived, without adequate warning. And Isaac lost his wife and his house. Many lost more. This is an amazing story; feel the power of this storm.
