Jennifer Government - by Max Barry

Book Review, © Copyright 2004, Jim Loy

This book is really wacky. It fits under many fiction categories, science fiction, mystery, action, humor, and other. It is not your worst paranoid nightmares come true, it is your worst paranoid nightmares stretched to nearly Wylie Coyote proportions.

Hack Nike works for Nike. He is contracted to kill ten Nike customers, for publicity reasons (don't worry, it makes economic sense), by psychopath John Nike, who is an executive for Nike (don't mistake him for the other psychopath John Nike, who also works for Nike). Hack didn't read the contract before signing it and wants out, so he goes to the police. Pearson Police, of the police, offers to take over Hack's contract, and kill the ten customers, for a percentage of Hack's pay. Pearson subcontracts the hit to the NRA, who are a very aggressive and profitable paramilitary organization. Stupid Billy NRA is mistaken for hitman Bill NRA. And Buy Mitsui, a stock broker for Mitsui, gets caught up in all this in various ways. And then there is Jennifer Government, who works for the government, and who is going to stop all this nonsense and put John Nike (the executive) behind bars.

Have I given away the story? Hey, this all takes place in the first three or four chapters. Read the book; it is amazing.
