No Picnic on Mount Kenya - by Felice Benuzzi

Book Review, © Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

Near the beginning of World War II, Mr. Benuzzi was a prisoner of war (when Ethiopia kicked the Italians out) in Kenya, near the base of Mt. Kenya. Escape was nearly impossible, as there were no allies of Italy nearby, and a white man would be easily spotted in the African wilderness. Mr. Benuzzi decided to fight the boredom and depression of prison life. He and two companions left a note saying not to worry, that they would be back, and then they escaped temporarily to climb Mr. Kenya, the second tallest mountain in Africa, and a difficult climb. Besides the normal climbing difficulties of ice, rock, and blizzards, they also encountered, very high on the mountain, rhinoceroses, elephants, and leopards. They attempted and failed to climb the highest peak, and had to settle for a lesser peak. This story is good, inspirational adventure.
