This story is told by Dan McGoorty to Robert Byrne. McGoorty was a wonderful character. You would love to be around him, and listen to him. His language was colorful (full of clever off-color remarks), his life was colorful, he was very funny. He hated working, and loved pool and 3-cushion billiards. He hustled pool. He travelled around the country in (and under) boxcars. Every time he lost a job he would go on a celebratory binge. And just when he cleaned up his life (quit drinking) and became a world-class billiard player, he was diagnosed with cancer. But he had no regrets. Well, maybe he shouldn't have cheated on his wives so many times. This book is easy to read, because it is a delight, from beginning to end.
This book is now called McGoorty (A Pool Room Hustler), and is back in print. A minor flaw in this edition is that most of the photos have been removed, but the captions remain.
