Our Votes, Our Guns - by Martin Meredith

Book Review, © Copyright 2002, Jim Loy

This is essentially the history of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). Zimbabwe resulted from the revolution led by Robert Mugabe against the oppressive white rule of Ian Smith in 1980. Mugabe was elected President, and was praised by governments worldwide. He soon started a reign of terror. Opponents and innocent people were killed by the hundreds. Essentially anyone not in the ruling party was threatened with death. The rulers became rich. The government became a one-party system. Zimbabwe has become a poverty-stricken wasteland. That situation continues today, and into the future. This is a sad, but interesting book.
