This is quite a book. The Navajo Code Talkers were U.S. Marines who spoke a code based on the Navajo language on radio, thoughout the South Pacific during World War II. The immense contribution of these code talkers can be summed up like this:

• During battles, eventually, nearly all secret messages between Marine units were transmitted using code talkers.
• The Japanese never broke the code.
• Secret messages sent in normal ways might take hours to encrypt, send, and decrypt; while code talkers translated the messages almost instantly.

This book is not only a fascinating account of the Navajo code talkers, but a sobering history of the costly victories of the U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, New Britain, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
