Farthest North - by Clive Holland

Book Review, © Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

The cover of this book says "edited by Clive Holland." But about half of the book is written by Mr. Holland. The rest of the book consists of extensive, first-hand quotes from other books (published and unpublished) and papers by the participants in the quest for the North Pole. Here we find heroism, foolishness, luck (good and bad), triumph, tragedy, fraud, miscalculation, pettiness, and mystery. There is even comedy, when Fridtjof Nansen lives through a multitude of blunders, each of which should have been fatal. Very good reading.
