These three books (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) are billed as being for young adults, but I think they are great science fiction for everyone. This is about parallel worlds, and has an interesting and attractive main character (a young lady named Lyra), one of the most evil villains you are likely to find, armored polar bears, demons (good and bad), ghosts, angels, violence, death, an assassin priest, and Dust (not dust). This is very good.
