These books are about the colonization of Mars:
These books rely on current science to make the stories very believable. Red Mars (winner of the 1993 Nebula Award) is about humans travelling to Mars, and trying to survive on a hostile planet. Some have hopes of terraforming Mars, changing it into a planet full of life. Some want it to remain the way it is, lifeless but grand and beautiful. The earth and its multi-national companies have hopes of exploiting it. And some people want power. And, there is a war. It's quite a story.
Green Mars (winner of the 1994 Hugo Award) is about a Mars which is supporting vegetation. The air is almost breathable, now. And there is still violence between the different sides. Blue Mars is about a Mars with an ocean, imported from the icy moons of the outer planets. All three are powerful stories.
