Pictures, a Park, and a Pulitzer - by Tom Lawrence

Book Review, © Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

The subtitle is "Mel Ruder and the Hungry Horse News." This is mainly a picture book of black and white photos by Mel Ruder, with historical and biographical text. In 1946, Mel Ruder printed the first issue of the Hungry Horse News in Columbia Falls, Montana. He retired in 1978. He was an expert photographer, and the Hungry Horse News featured high quality photos, which other newspapers could not compete with. The chapters of the book are: Mel Ruder, The Park, Personalities, Working, Beasts, and All the News. The park is Glacier National Park; the book contains some beautiful pictures of the park. And All the News includes a small section on the Flathead River flood of 1964. Mr. Ruder won a Pulitzer Prize (for "local reporting") for his coverage of this flood. He died at the Montana Veteran's Home, in Columbia Falls, in October 2000.

MoonlightThis is a needlepoint picture that I designed, based upon a photo by Mel Ruder (click on it to see a larger view of it). I haven't been able to determine which issue of the Hungry Horse News it is from.
