A Leg To Stand On - by Oliver Sacks

Book Review, © Copyright 1997, Jim Loy

Oliver Sacks is a neurologist and the best-selling author of Awakenings (film starring Robin Williams), The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, An Anthropologist On Mars, and Seeing Voices.

This book is the story of Dr. Sacks himself, after he suffered a severe knee injury. He was chased off a cliff, by a bull. He tells how his immobilized leg became an alien thing that did not seem to belong to him. He suffered tremendous difficulties regaining the use of his leg. The doctors and nurses were largely unsympathetic.

After he recovered, Dr. Sacks found that his situation was largely undocumented in medical literature, and was also very common. He wrote the book to help fill the void.

All of his books are delightful (I didn't read Awakenings, but I hear it is very good).
