Stacking the Deck - by Bryan Berg and Thomas O'Donnell

Book Review, © Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

This may be the most amazing book of all time. You will stare at the many black and white photos with your mouth open. They are beautiful, and awe inspiring; in fact, they are unbelieveable, truly. Bryan Berg builds houses and other structures out of playing cards. There is a huge domed monument (a replica of the Iowa state capital building made with 2000 decks of cards and taking 11 days to build), a 25-foot tall skyscraper, a platform which held up over 2000 pounds. What he does is so far beyond the traditional house of cards, that he makes the rest of us seem as clumsy as babies wearing mittens. OK, maybe we can aspire to do what he does with thirty or forty decks of cards (or a few hundred decks or a few thousand), but it is only because he has opened our eyes. I can't even think about this book without laughing out loud; I am amazed. Needless to say, Mr. Berg holds more than one Guinness World Record.
