The Little Friend - by Donna Tartt

Book Review, © Copyright 2002, Jim Loy

This is a great book. The writing is excellent; the characters are fascinating, the story is very good. But there are some things about this book which I hated. Harriet is a genius. Even though nearly everything she does in the book is stupid beyond belief, there is no doubt that she is a genius. And she is a very attractive and sympathetic character, while she lies, commits multiple felonies, and ruins lives. It's not exactly a mystery story, as the mysteries are not ever made clear. It's not exactly a thriller (there are several very frightening moments), as only about 50 of the 555 pages are thrilling. The rest is rather slow, but fascinating, sometimes tense. The story often takes us inside the racing mind of a speed freak criminal, and these visits seem frighteningly realistic. This is a very uneven book, good and bad. But it is mostly very very good. I recommend it.
