Life in Prison - by Stanley "Tookie" Williams

Book Review, © Copyright 2001, Jim Loy

The author was the co-founder of the Crips gang in LA. He was convicted of killing four people in two robberies. Now he is on death row at San Quentin. For several years, he has been trying to destroy the gangs, by writing books for kids, telling them why they should not join gangs, or why they should get out of the gangs they are in. He was nominated for the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. This book tells what prison is like, and why you don't ever want to be put there; this is life in hell. It is a book for kids, but it is also a shock to read. Here is the table of contents:

  1. Cages
  2. A day in prison
  3. Stir-crazy
  4. The strip search
  5. Rules
  6. The hole (solitary confinement)
