The Watchman - by Jonathan Littman

Book Review, © Copyright 1998, Jim Loy

This book is subtitled, "The Twisted Life and Crimes of Serial Hacker Kevin Poulsen." This is an amazing book, about an amazing young hacker, a young man who could eavesdrop on any telephone conversation, anywhere. He won two Porsches, and lots of money, by fixing radio contests, while he was a fugitive, hiding out from the FBI. He wiretapped the police who were trying to find him. He burglarized phone company offices, including the office of one of the investigators. And he stalked Molly Ringwald. And, he sold phone book yellow page ads, to pimps. What? And he went to prison for five years.

Whether you understand any of the technical details of this book or not, it will be difficult not to be amazed at the power this kid had. Besides that, there are tense burglaries, and car chases. This is very good book.

Also, see The Switchroom, Kevin Poulsen's home page, on the WWW. Kevin says that Littman made up quotes in the book.
