Game-Invitational Relays

© Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

In general, natural bidding is done when heading for part score, or in invitational situations. Relays are most often used in game forcing situations. But there are invitational relays (relays used in game-invitational situations).

In such invitational situations, the first relay normally asks for clarification of strength. Here is an example of the responses to such a first relay:

  1. min.
  2. max, balanced.
  3. max, unbalanced.

With this information, relayer can then bail out into a part score, if necessary.

Invitational relays are often made after a negative (or 2nd negative) response to 1C, or after a Precision 1D opening. They are also made after a 2C or higher opening, as there is less bidding space for relay sequences
