Nebulous 1D

© Copyright 2002, Jim Loy

In Precision, a 1D opening bid is nebulous, showing a variety of possible hands. 1D is bid with 11-15 HCP, and no other bid is possible. It can be bid with as few as 2 diamonds.

A few relay systems have an even more nebulous 1D opening bid. This has little to do with relays. But the effort to make the other opening bids more descriptive makes it tempting to dump more possible hands into the 1D opening.

The Viking Club has this description of their 1D opening:

  1. At least 5 diamonds, unbalanced.
  2. Balanced, with point count not covered by an opening 1NT
  3. Both minor suits, 6 clubs and 5 diamonds, or possibly 6 clubs and 4 diamonds.

When not vulnerable, in first or second seat, they use a very weak (disruptive) 10-12 HCP 1NT opening. And "balanced" includes the 4441 shape. So 1D could show as few as one diamond.

The Ice Relay says this about their 1D opening:

  1. 10-15 HCP 5+C or 5+D or any 4441
  2. 10-12 HCP balanced in 3rd or 4th hand

Power Precision has this description for1D: 12 to a poor 16 HCP, 1 or more diamonds.
