What Should We Call Relayer's Partner?

© Copyright 1996, Jim Loy

The following was posted to the rec.games.bridge newsgroup:

What should we call relayer's partner? Amalya Kearse, in Bridge Conventions Complete, calls the two players who are involved in a relay, "relayer" and "puppet." George Rosenkranz calls them "captain" and "scanner." Dutton's Moscito book calls them "relayer" and "relayee." "Captain" and "crew" or "captain" and "servant" also have been used. "Responder" or "partner" could even be used for relayer's partner. Here are a few silly alternatives, that you may prefer:

     Edgar Bergen Charlie McCarthy
shark remora
sheep dog flock
king peasant/pawn
formula 1 clunker
Betelgeuse (a huge star) Van Biesbrock's Star (a tiny star)
Darth storm trooper
Dr. Frankenstein Igor
hare tortoise
tortoise hare
Saturday Monday
slave owner slave
Superman Clark Kent
winner loser
Klingon Ferengi
Mozart Salieri
Captain Kirk expendable crewperson
PBS MTV
Dr. Jeckle Mr. Hyde
Bugs Elmer
Roadrunner Wile E. Coyote
Larry Curly/Moe/Shemp

You might try one of those, the next time you use Stayman. You can be Darth and partner can be the storm trooper. I prefer to be Mozart.
