3NT Signoff

© Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

Nearly all relay systems use 3NT, by Relayer, as a signoff, even when it is the cheapest possible bid. The only times when 3NT is not a signoff is when either a major suit fit has been agreed upon, or when slam interst has been shown. Both of these conditions are fairly rare, as normally Relayer's partner is kept in the dark concerning fits and slam ambitions. When 3NT is the cheapest possible bid, then 4C becomes the relay.

Often 4H or 4S is a signoff only when Relayer's partner has shown 4+ cards in that suit. In some relay systems, 4H or 4S (as the cheapest bid) is always a relay, never a signoff.

See Intro to Relays - A 2D Relay Stayman. "Sign off" is two words. I am coining the word "signoff," for no good reason.
