Loy-Schmidt, 1974 Golden Squires Postal Ty.

Alex Dunne gave this game, without commentary except to call it a "terrific attacking game," in his April 1986 edition of "The Check Is In the Mail," in Chess Life. Note that the postal rating scale was quite a bit different from the over-the-board scale. My rating went up from the starting 900 to over 1300. When it got to exactly 1300, I figured that people might take me for an inexperienced player, as 1300 was a rating that a player could start at, if he considered him(her)self to be rather strong.

16 Nxf7 (Both players knew this was coming, and both were probably confident of winning) 16...Kxf7 17 Be6+ Ke8 (17...Kf8 may be no better) 18 e5 Nf8 19 exd6 exd6 20 Re1 Kd8 21 Ne4 Nxe6 22 dxe6 Nd5 23 Nxd6 (This is actually sound) 23...Qxd6 24 Qxg6 Qf8 (24...Qe7 similar?) 25 Bxh6 (25 e7+? draws by perpetual check) 25...Bxh6 26 e7+ Nxe7 27 Rbd1+ Nd5 28 Qc6 (28 Rxd5+ Kc7 29 Rf5 may be an easier win) 28...Bc4 29 Re6 Ra7 30 Rd6+ Ke7 31 Rxh6 Kd8 32 Rd6+ Ke7 33 R1xd5 (33 Qxc5 or 33 R6xd5 also win) 33...Bxd5 34 Qxd5 Qg7 35 Qxc5 Ke8 36 Re6+ Kd8 37 Qd6+ 1-0.

So far, the original Knight sac seems sound.
