The U.S. Chess Stamp

© Copyright 1998, Jim Loy

On your left, you see the U.S. postage stamp, commemorating chess in the U.S.A. What, you don't see a stamp? Maybe you should have your eyes checked. OK, OK, there has never been a U.S. chess stamp.

We had a World Champ, in Bobby Fischer. Three countries (Iceland, Niger, and Mali) commemorated that event, with stamps. But, Fischer probably won't be on any American stamps, since he defied the government's ban on playing in Yugoslavia (by spitting on a genuine government document).

Well, the U.S. has always been one of the leading chess powers (but often not number one). At one time, before there was an official World Championship, Paul Morphy (an American) dominated the world of chess. Why isn't there a Paul Morphy stamp? Maybe chess is not important enough to the U.S. Instead, the U.S. Post Office issues ugly "love" stamps and stamps with made-up, cartoon-like space ships.

For what it is worth, here is my candidate for a U.S. postage stamp.
