See Sine Wave. These are two sine waves and their sum. The yellow one moves left to right; the blue one moves right to left at the same speed, but it has half the amplitude and half the wavelength; the green one is the sum (the two other waves, superimposed). The sum is a complicated wave that changes its shape as it moves left to right.
