Dog Crap on the Jogging Path

© Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

I just encountered a lady with three dogs on the jogging trail, and one of her dogs took a crap just off the trail, while we both watched. I almost said something insulting. I had to restrain myself, because I have been encountering a lot of stupid jerks, and I am not very tolerant lately. The city (or someone) provides bags and gloves for cleaning up such things, but many people cannot be bothered. Well, it gets fairly smelly (and messy), and it obviously spreads disease germs.

I'm trying to figure out if not cleaning up after your dog carries a fine, here in Bozeman, MT. It seems to be a $100 fine on the city sidewalks, where crap like this also occurs.

I know that some of these dog owners like to think that it is natural for the scenic hills and woods to absorbe all this dog crap. Dogs are closely related to wild animals, you know. Yes, and I hope they crap on your carpet and chew up your furniture, as I'm sure they do without my wishing it so. Pets and pet owners must make some concessions when living in a city. Dogs don't run in packs (and live to tell about it), and they are on leashes, and their owners know their responsibility to clean up after them. Right? Often the alternative is humongous fines, for violating leash laws, except that most do not get caught. I'm going to start taking my digital cameral with me on the trail, and you should see some pictures of doggy squatting right here on www.jimloy.com!

Addendum:

It's a year later, I have no pictures (I only witnessed one dog crapping, but I didn't have my camera with me). Yes indeed there is a fine for this ($200, I guess), and, as far as I know, no one has ever been caught. And surprise, there are a lot of feces out there. I'm sure I could fill a grocery bag, if I went around to the trails in town.
