Slow Internet Connection

© Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

As I type this, I am downloading a 7 megabyte file. Let's see, I am informed that this is going to take another 14 hr. 38 min. 52 sec., at a streaking 0.1 kilobytes/sec. Hey, I've got a 56K modem and a 200 MHz computer. Good thing I don't have my old 14.4 modem. I'd be here all day. And, I keep losing the connection; Netscape tells me that the server may be down. So, I gotta sit right here and click on OK every half hour or so. I don't know if other people have this problem. Hm moving right along, 14 hr. 31 min. 1 sec. Whoa, now it says 20 hr. 29 min. 25 sec. What's going on here? Oh, I lost the connection again. Now it's 19 hr. 16 min. 37 sec. I've got another file to download, later. Now my 56K modem is cooking, 0.6K/sec., only 2 hr. 37 min. 34 sec. to go. OK, it's now up to 1.2K/sec., and I've got less than an hour left. The total time will be about 2 hours. Now I feel lucky to get 1.2K/sec. from a 56K modem!

I continue to complain. It is 3AM, and I just downloaded a file at 0.2K/sec.

Addendum:

My email program just received a 10K document at 36 bytes/sec. That took a little over 5 minutes. Montana Communication Network (MCN) is my Internet provider, by the way.
