Phone vs. Email

© Copyright 2001, Jim Loy

I may be alone with this problem, but sometimes I have difficulty using the phone. I prefer email by a long way. I forget what I'm going to say, and I worry about the cost, to me and to the other person. I sometimes can't think while I'm on the phone. With email, I can compose my thoughts and feel free to send followup messages.

I just received a phone call offering me a writing job. The guy had seen one of my WWW pages. He woke me up out of a dead sleep. And my elbow hurt, besides. And I was sure that this would be either a wrong number or someone who thought that I might have a crack in my windshield. So I was in a foul mood. He asked if I would write an article, expanding on the WWW article on my pages. I didn't feel qualified to do the job. I actually did not know much about the subject, besides what I had already written. So I turned him down. As soon as I hung up, I knew that I wanted the job. I can do the research. But I didn't remember the guy's name, or who he worked for. He hadn't given me his phone number. His phone call turned out to be untraceable. The opportunity was lost. If only he had emailed me.

People sometimes call me for advice, often about which bridge-playing program I recommend. Very often, I remember something I was going to say, just as I hang up. Serves these people right, I guess, for calling me. My email address is on many of my WWW pages.
