On the Internet, you sometimes see this dude and his relatives:
:-)
People don't want to offend, so they "smile when they say that, pardner." Personally, I think that we see too much of this. Some people use these at the end of almost every sentence. But, it doesn't hurt to know what they mean. Here is a list, from the World Almanac:
| :-) | Smile | :-b... | Drooling | |
| ;-) | Wink | =-o | Argh! | |
| :-* | Kiss | {*} | Hug and a kiss | |
| :-( | Unhappy | :p | Raz | |
| :-o | Shouting |
Internet abbreviations, given in the same source, are:
| BTW | By the way | HHOS | Ha, ha, only serious | |
| F2F | Face to face (personal meeting) | IMHO | In my humble opinion | |
| FCOL | For crying out loud | IMO | In my opinion | |
| FWIW | For what it's worth | LOL | Laughing out loud | |
| FYI | For your information | OTOH | On the other hand | |
| GOK | God only knows | ROFL or ROTFL | Rolling on the floor, laughing | |
| HHOK | Ha, ha, only kidding | TAFN | That's all for now |
Two or three of these seem to be fairly important (BTW, FYI, and IMO).
