Egyptian Units of Measurement

units of measurementThe unit of grain measure was the hekat. Instead of Egyptian Fractions, fractions of a hekat were usually written using parts of the Wedjat Eye of Horus. Smaller fractions were done with regular Egyptian fractions.

The unit of length was the cubit. Cubits varied throughout the ancient world. In Egypt, it seems to have been about 20.6 inches or 523 millimeters. One cubit was seven palms or 28 digits. A rod was 100 cubits. And there were occasionally other units of length.

The unit of area was the Greek aurora, which was 100 cubits squared (about 2/3 acre or 2735 square meters). Sometimes "cubit" meant "square cubits."

The unit of weight (for metals) was the deben (about 91 grams).
