Books About Egyptian Hieroglyphics

I am often asked to recommend a book on Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Here are the books that I recommend:

• Egyptian Grammar by Gardiner (huge and expensive)
• Egyptian Hieroglyphic Grammar by Mercer (1926), may be out of print
• Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian by Faulkner (only Egyptian to English, not vice versa)

There are also many books by E. Wallace Budge. These are often inaccurate, but are useful (his two volume dictionary is quite extensive) when you check almost every word with other books. There is a crude English to Egyptian booklet for the Faulkner dictionary.

• Middle Egyptian by Allen (grammar, relatively advanced)
• Reading Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Collier and Manley (for beginners, etc.) hardcover
