Words that begin with the Egyptian letter "s" (
or sometimes
) are often causative verbs. These are formed by merely adding an
"s" at the beginning of another verb (or sometimes some other part of
speech). The meaning of the verb is changed to become "cause to..."
For example,
means "live" or "life;" and adding an
"s" on the front changes the meaning to "cause to live" or
"preserve." A few causatives are not quite that simple, the meaning
being slightly different. Use
My Egyptian
Hieroglyphic Dictionary to compare the meaning of the original word with
that of its causative.
