Particles In Egyptian

© Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

A particle ("part." in my dictionary) is a word that does not fit into the regular grammar of the language. Examples would be words like "hm" or "aha!" In Egyptian, there are two types of particles, non-enclitic, and enclitic ("non-encl. part." and "encl. part." in my dictionary). Essentially, a non-enclitic particle is emphatic ("Indeed!") and goes at the beginning of a sentence, even before the verb. An enclitic particle ("moreover") goes in the body of the sentence, and is associated with one of the words of the sentence.
