Personal Pronouns In Egyptian

© Copyright 1997, Jim Loy

Suffix Pronouns

See my article on the suffix pronouns, for a very popular way to write the personal pronouns (I, you, he ...).

Dependent Pronouns

These are dependent pronouns. Notice that the plural forms are the same as the same as the plural suffix pronouns. Dependent pronouns are normal pronouns which are used as objects (direct object or object of a preposition, for example), or after these non-enclitic particles (exclamations which appear at the beginning of a sentence):

Independent Pronouns

Another form of personal pronoun is the independent pronoun. These appear at the beginning of a sentence, even before the verb, and are emphatic (emphasizes the pronoun). The first one, can be translated as "It is I who ..." The others can be translated similarly. Notice that most of them are of the form + a suffix pronoun.

See the Egyptian alphabet to see what sounds the transliteration symbols represent.
