Halloween

© Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

It is Halloween, one of my favorite holidays. It is when our children learn to worship the devil, and expect candy from strangers. They learn about witches and goblins and ghosts. And if you don't give them candy the greedy little beggars punish you by soaping your windows, or by acts of vandalism. They don't do that so much anymore, not because they have finally gotten religion, but because it is dangerous to be out begging at night.

Halloween is not that bad, is it? These kids turn out all right. But the idea of Halloween amazes me. We actually celebrate this occult holiday. Why? I don't understand.

Disclaimer:

OK, I don't really object to witches, walking skeletons, and monsters. It's all in fun. But, I am amused that people are willing to celebrate using blatant occult imagery. And I do object to unsupervised kids out on the street at night, expecting candy from strangers. Have a Halloween party, with some safe candy, instead. Doesn't that make sense?
