A Scam from Nigeria (Lottery Scams)

See A Scam from Nigeria, where I wrote this:

I have won a lottery, and they just need to send me the money (it was hard to turn that down, even though I never entered any lottery). My guess is this: You've won millions of dollars. Then they find out that you never entered. Shame on you for leading them on like that. They are tempted to blow the whistle on you for trying to defraud them like that, you crook. But they will keep their mouths shut, and give you the millions of dollars besides, if you will slip them a little bribe, maybe a few thousand (or maybe a few hundred, as they will be willing to negotiate with you) dollars. You may suggest to them that they send the millions first, then you can afford to pay the bribe. But they now know that they cannot trust you, you crook, so it is money up front please. And, will they ever send you the millions of dollars?

I received this email:

For a second, my heart almost stopped when I received this email notifying me about winning a one million Dollars prize in cash from EAAS Lottery Inc. in the Euro-Afro American Sweepstakes. Honestly, I was taken off-guard by this email because it was the first of its kind that I ever receive. I have received emails from Nigeria regarding funds of enormous figures and I knew that they were pure fraud. However, and regarding this lottery thing, being new to me, I really gave it some though instead of deleting it right away. I was contemplating responding to that message to see where it takes me. Then I thought it would be better to search the web for the co-called EAAS lottery headquarters, and this lead me to your website. Thank you so much for the valuable information you have listed and which confirmed my doubts about that email. Keep up the good work and let’s hope that all these scam emails just cease to appear.

Another:

I got an email from a company (Griffiti Stakes Lottery London) informing that i had won 4 million pounds and told me to come to london or contact by email to get claim. when i send email to that address it bounce back showing your email is rejected. What is the real thing about the lottery? pls advice me.

My guess is that their Internet provider cut them off.

People keep writing to me, asking if their lottery email is a scam or not. If you never entered that lottery, I'm pretty sure it's a scam. The scammers want you to send them some money, eventually, and you will never see your lottery "winnings." They may present you with lots of documentation, and eventually lean on you pretty hard (threaten you with prison or a lawsuit). But it's a scam.

This scam has been around forever, long before the Internet. And is called an "up front scam," because you have to pay money up front in order to get rich, and you'll never get rich (you're in the army now, sorry, what were we talking about). This scam has been done for a few dollars (you hold the hundred dollars, but give us ten dollars just so we can trust you), to big inheritance (or whatever) scams. Sometimes it was done face to face, sometimes through the mail. The only difference with the Internet is that you can't ever catch these guys, because their country won't cooperate.
