Plagiarism and the WWW

© Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

I have written My Synopsis of The Hound of the Baskervilles. One of my ideas there, is to interest people in reading the entire story, as it is a thriller. Another idea is to show how to read a book and prepare a book report by taking notes. That page is a slightly polished version of my actual notes, which I took while reading the book. There may be students who actually copied my synopsis, word for word, and turned it in, as their assignments. This is cheating, and it is also a crime, plagiarism (my synopsis is copyrighted). I won't be taking anybody to court, unless they publish my synopsis in a book or magazine without my permission. But your teacher will give penalties for cheating.

My Google search for "plagiarism" turns up these anti-plagiarism WWW sites (and more):

Michael L. Spears: Plagiarism Q&A (listed above) tells how to do a plagiarism search of key phrases, using Google.
