I Was Attacked By A Dog

© Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

This winter, I was attacked by a dog. He didn't bite me. But, he kept me motionless for a long time, 15 or 20 minutes. He was a big dog, looked like a husky, with one blue eye and one brown eye. When I didn't move, he seemed uninterested (even confused), although he wouldn't go away. My smallest movement transformed him into attack mode. It was upsetting, and a little frightening. I did restrain myself from saying, "Bite me." I bought a little spray can of pepper spray, so that next time his day will be ruined even more than mine. I called the police, and talked to the animal control people. They talked to the owner.

Of course, I have encountered many dogs in my life. Most were nice, friendly dogs, some sloppily so. But a few were antisocial. One little tiny one tore my pants. One big one ran in front of my car; and a tiny movement of my steering wheel spun the car around 180 degrees on the ice, on a US Highway. He ran out in front of me twice more, as I drove back to a place where I could turn around, and when I left.

A big dog liked to throw a rubber ball, and then chase it. He held the ball in his teeth and then threw the ball with a snap of his neck. He did this as my car approached. The ball flew in front of my car, and I hit the dog in the mouth with the bumper of my car. I could hear the bump as the car hit him. I drove around the block to find a parking spot. The dog was OK, but very frightened.

I recently witnessed (from across the street) an interesting attack. The dog owner tied his dog up, to a door (I think) of a store, down town. The dog owner went into the store. Another man walked by, and the dog lunged at him. This man kicked the dog, right in the teeth. The dog owner came rushing out of the store, very angry. The man and a witness assured the dog owner that the dog had attacked the man. The man who had kicked the dog then walked away. Then the dog owner untied his dog and sicked the dog on the departing man. The dog was confused, and did not attack the man. I imagine that what I saw was assault with a dangerous weapon, which probably carries a few years in prison.
