My Ego

© Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

Sometimes I seem to have a pretty high opinion of myself. Ask me how good a chess player I am, and I am likely to say, "Pretty good" (meaning that I can probably beat you with one hand tied behind my back). I figure that you are asking for a reason, not just to be lied to. There are certainly many thousands of chess players who can beat me. But I can stomp the average tournament chess player into the ground. My rating is about 1900 (it was once 2005), as I recall. I am fairly strong. Same thing with pool and bowling. In checkers by mail, I am world class. And the confidence that I have, strong ego if you prefer, helps me do well in the present and will do so in the future.

But why brag about it? Well, I'm sorry if you thought I was bragging. My competence in checkers is very important concerning my checkers articles on these pages. The fact that I am about to take second place in the I-D tournament (the national championship of checkers by mail) has a strong bearing on whether you believe what I say about checkers or not.

Not only that, but isn't it interesting that I do all of these things? Hey, I'm not a great painter. But please look at my paintings. And I play checkers, and write stories, and write about Egyptian hieroglyphics, and lots of stuff. Aren't my stupid jokes funny (or stupid at least)? See I Was Out-Smarted By A Tree.

Still not humble enough for you? Sorry. You may have to look somewhere else.
