Watering the Sidewalk

© Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

A lot of people water their lawns, to make them green and nice looking. Many of these people seem to also water the sidewalk. That is not a big inconvenience to me. And I wouldn't normally complain about it. But it amuses me that these people, trying to make their lawns green and nice looking, are forcing pedestrians to step off the sidewalk and onto their grass. They are harming (maybe killing) some of their grass. One day I saw water flowing down the street. I thought that there was a leaking fire hydrant or water main. Instead it was a sprinkler. Someone was watering the street.

I also see overgrown hedges, when I'm out walking. I have to agree that a squarely cut hedge looks a little unnatural (sometimes they look relatively good, though). But the totally natural hedges that I encounter force me to again walk on the lawns. In fact, there are paths through the grass. And so these people have chosen (perhaps without meaning to) to sacrifice their lawns in favor of a natural looking hedge. And eventually the city makes some of them trim their hedges, because they are blocking the sidewalks and blocking the views of motorists.
