It seems to be widely believed that you can see stars in the sky, during the daytime, from the bottom of a dark well or mine shaft. I have been skeptical of this, all my life. It seemed to be a gross misconception of the scattering of light about the sky, the Rayleigh Scattering. Now I find that I was right (I read it somewhere). You cannot see any stars under those circumstances.
I have actually tried to verify the above by looking up a tall chimney. Of course, my negative results (no stars) do not disprove the widely believed theory. My chimney may not have been tall enough. I'm sure that it was taller than most wells.
