Ancient Egyptians in Australia?

© Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

A couple of people have sent me email and links concerning this weird topic. There are apparently Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions (carved writing in rock) near Gosford, Australia, within Brisbane Water National Park. Some people seem to think that these inscriptions suggest (or prove) that Egyptians visited Australia (by sea or by space ship). My first impression, upon seeing quite a few photographs, is this: There are inscriptions that definitely are not Egyptian. There are inscriptions which are a very bad imitation of Egyptian, suggesting a hoax. And there are some relatively accurate Egyptian signs and words, which do not seem to say anything; they are mostly Egyptian gibberish, also suggestive of a hoax. Many of the inscriptions of this last category seem to have been carved recently, even though some of it is covered with lichens (which are not evidence of any great age). A few of the inscriptions look old (the carving is weathered), but most of these seem to be of the non-Egyptian or bad imitation kind. The great variety suggests an ongoing hoax perpetrated by many hoaxers.

Archeologists in Australia also get email about this, and a recent issue of Archeological Diggings, from Australia, has an article "Debunking the Gosford Glyphs," by David Coltheart. The article confirms that the inscriptions are bogus, that at least one person has been caught carving some of them, and that more inscriptions are added every month, and some of the rock can be weathered after only a few years. Also people have vandalized the place further, perhaps searching for mummies. I would suggest to them, that they wait until the mummy finds them. Haaaa ha ha ha ha ha. Sorry, am I drooling?
