Horoscopes

© Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

I was recently browsing at a supermarket magazine rack, when I noticed that there are a lot of magazines for teenage girls. And most of the covers announced that inside could be found a horoscope especially tuned for teenage girls. One magazine did not mention "horoscope" on its cover, but there it was inside, anyway. My first gut reaction was: Do these magazine editors think that teenage girls are stupid? Then I remembered that many (perhaps most) people are stupid (in some ways). So why should teenage girls be any different? I guess these magazines are providing a service for stupid girls. The smart ones just read about boys and sex and clothes and makeup.

I do not subscribe to a newspaper. One reason is that they all have horoscopes with no disclaimer or warning. I hear that the New York Times has no horoscope. But another reason that I don't subscribe is that it is depressing to be an informed citizen, with wars, hunger, crime, terrorizm, accidents, and politics. And besides that, the last newspaper girl I had left my newspaper in the snow. I quit the next day. That was over fifteen years ago.

Anyway, I consider a horoscope an insult to everyone's intelligence.
