A stereogram is a two dimensional picture that you stare at with your eyes pointing in slightly different directions, so that you see three dimensional objects in it. Making the eyes go slightly wide is preferable. But some people must slightly cross the eyes, to get the opposite (inside out) effect.
Here is a simplified stereogram. Stare at the two x's, and adust your eyes (relax the focus for a second) so that you see three x's (four x's will also work). The O's become a flat layer with a row of *'s in front of them.

O O O O O O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
O * O * O* * *O * O * O * O* *
O O O O O O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
That is all there is to it. Apparently some people have to cross their eyes to do this, then it is harder to focus. So it is better to just relax the eyes and let them go slightly wider, as if focusing on a much greater distance. The typical stereogram looks much more elaborate than the above. But it is virtually identical to the above picture of O's and *'s. I will be showing typical stereogram here, later.
Addendum:
This is a stereogram which I designed using Single Image Random Text Stereograms (SIRTS):

Stare at it for a while. You should eventually see a three-dimensional object. This is the depth mapping for that image:
