Andre Agassi is famous for his swinging volley, among other things. Instead of letting the ball bounce, he steps into no-person's land, and hits a winning volley with a full swing. And his coach cringes. It is a dangerous shot. Even Andre sometimes hits it into the net.
Most pros do the swinging volley, sometimes. And their coaches cringe, too. But it is one of the things that coaches do.
The announcers say that you should not try that dangerous shot. In my mind, a swinging volley shows a highly aggressive attitude. It also shows impatience. You can maybe get the point if you wait. But you want the point now. But, it is a dangerous shot. You will probably lose the point. But, we can see why Andre does it.
I hear that Chris Evert says that Andre's swinging volley shows laziness. He doesn't want to win the game with two shots, a ground stroke (or a volley) followed by the put away. He wants his put away now at all cost. It's hard to argue with that.
