In tennis, I have won three trips to Vale, Colorado. They weren't going to be free trips. But I never found out just how much they would cost, because I never got to go. It was USTA League, formerly called Team Tennis. Each year, someone got a team together, and we played in the state tournament. Each of us said we would be able to go to Vale, if we won. And we won the state tournament, and won a trip to Vale. Once we took second, and got the right to go to Vale when the winners couldn't go. Nowadays they go to Salt Lake City or somewhere. Anyway, each year, several of my teammates then said they couldn't go. So, I never got to go.
I vowed to never go through that again. Such vows are meant to be broken. I skipped several years. Then, two years ago, I entered a team which I thought was in a senior (over 50) league. It was not, it was USTA League again. But we didn't do as well, and never got close to going to Salt Lake. Last year, I was recovering from a stay in the hospital. And this year, I had an elbow injury. I'll try a senior league next year.
Two years in a row, our team captain (Mike) couldn't make it to the state tournament. He told us that we only needed five players. He was wrong. We forfeited many games, both times. One of those times, we won a trip to Vale, and Mike couldn't go there either.
